Supervisor races headed to runoff

In a subdued primary election Tuesday featuring a very low turnout, two Kings County supervisors seats are headed for a runoff. In District 2, which includes Corcoran, Avenal and Kettleman City, former Nicole Parra staffer Richard Valle will face second-place finisher Terry Kwast in a runoff election in November.

Neither reached the magic number -- 50 percent -- required to win outright. Valle had 643 votes, while Kwast garnered 597.

"The work was definitely put in as far as the door-to-door. It was great to see the fruit of that labor in the numbers," Valle said.

Kwast said he had hoped that somebody would get 50 percent and end it. He said that campaigning is "not all the fun it's cracked up to be."

Kwast said he thought Valle "did a better job" of getting people registered and helping supporters to vote absentee.

"It's whoever can work to get their voters out who's going to make the difference," he said.

In District 5, which includes east Hanford and Home Garden, Alene Taylor got 43 percent of the vote, compared to 30 percent for second-place finisher Richard Fagundes.

Andrew Mattos, the longtime Kings County employee who mounted an energetic effort, fell short with 26 percent.

"I was a little surprised. I really would have thought Mattos would have done better. I thought he worked harder than Mr. Fagundes did," Taylor said.

Taylor, now in her 12th year in the seat, said she wasn't surprised that she outpaced the rest of the field.

"I think people appreciate the job that I do," she said.

In the contest for Dept. 2 Superior Court judge, it was a runaway victory for incumbent James LaPorte, who was appointed in 2005.

LaPorte's challenger was Greg Strickland, a former Kings County district attorney.

LaPorte tallied 74 percent of the vote compared to Strickland's 25 percent.

"I think the magnitude of the victory was because of the efforts of my campaign committee and all the volunteers," LaPorte said.

LaPorte said that Strickland ran a "dignified campaign."

The state and national primaries on the ballot went uncontested.

Democrat Fran Florez and Republican Danny Gilmore will face each other in Assembly District 30 in November.

Jim Costa, D-Fresno, and Republican challenger Jim Lopez will face off in the 20th congressional district.

" To Mr. Kwast. I know what you mean (Valle "did a better job" of getting people registered and helping supporters to vote absentee.) I few years ago my parents have never been voters. And a couple of people went by their house to help them become registered absentee voters. And stated I will be back before the election to help you fill out your ballot. they showed up before the election to help them selfs. They told my parents (hey look this guy is really good) if you want to vote for him just mark right here. "

" What is Strickland's fascination with running for office. He doesn't put any effort into it. I don't get it. I don't see how this helps him. "

" What we need is a capable person to run for Sheriff in two years or whatever is left of the current Sheriff's term. Anyone have any suggestions? I would like to see someone who can build that department back up. "

" How about Strickland for Sheriff??? Could it be any worse? I am supporting whoever runs against Jordan, that department has been destroyed from what I have heard. Many 15 year veterans leaving the department-is that typical? "

" "We" got Sheriff Jordan because (some of) "You" listened to the complainers with an agenda concerning the prior Sheriff and took it hook, line, and sinker. I'm not anti-Jordan - my point is you need to be careful what you ask for, you just might get it.... "

" I don't know if Chief Shortnacy would run. The Sheriff's Department is so out of whack. Why would anyone want to go to a place like that. If he did run he would have my vote. "

" QUIT COMPLAINING AND START MAKING CHANGES IN THE COMMUNITY GET INVOLVED YOU ALL LIVE HERE AND THIS IS YOUR COMMUNITY AS WELL. THIS ENTIRE COUNTY NEEDS A MAKEOVER MAYBE WE CAN BE THE FIRST U.S. CITY TO GET OUR OWN TV SHOW CALLED NEW CITY MAKEOVER. SO MANY OF THESE PEOPLE JUST TWIDDLE THERE THUMBS AND DO NOTHING.......................... "

Luis wrote on Jun 10, 2008 5:29 PM:

" You people are so crazy. First of all Shortnancy is less than a Chief of Police, he has no experience to take on a huge job as Sheriff. He morals and standards are at issue and he doesn't know how to command his own department. Secondly, changes have to start at the top (Sheriff's Department) . When you have a lame duck Sheriff who has never even tried to fix the wrongs in the department, this also says much about his capabilities to lead. Hopefully Jordan WON'T run again in two years and hopefully someone with experience and know how can turn this now debunked department around. If you people only knew how messed up the Sheriff's Department really is you would puke. "

Jordan OK wrote on Jun 10, 2008 10:55 PM:

" The people complaining on this blog about Jordan are the whining, cry baby deputy sheriffs who are never happy unless they get everything they want-spoiled! "

Agree with Jordan OK wrote on Jun 11, 2008 12:47 PM:

" You spend too much time griping and spewing garbage from all directions. It is disgusting that this blog turned into a tabloid. Jordan is not perfect and niether was the many sheriffs before him. These articles could be about a spelling bee and you guys will turn it into some bashing session against Jordan or many others. Most of the people on here don't even know what the problems truly are. It is simply a feeding frenzy. If it is deputies that spend their time here complaining then that says more about them than the Sheriff. You are foolish to whine on an anonymous blog. What will it accomplish...Nothing! If you have problems go to the Sheriff, if he can't or won't address them go to the Board, if they don't address them, then maybe it is you...get over it. There isn't going to be a perfect Sheriff. Try to be a part of something constructive. Too much whining!!! "

To Agree with wrote on Jun 11, 2008 5:52 PM:

" You don't own this blog and anyone can vent whatever is on their mind! You need to get over it and realize this maybe an out for some to vent. Your comments could be considered whining as you continue to defend a worthless sheriff. If you don't like to hear the whining, go to a different blog and act like you are the almighty somewhere else! You and many others like you are the first to blame law enforcement when law enforcement messes up. Maybe some are trying to prevent this and tell you and the many others like you the $10,000 per month your tax dollars are paying the sheriff is a waste because he has made his department ineffective! "

Grow up wrote on Jun 12, 2008 1:49 AM:

" Venting? Is that what you call it. It is evident that our deputy bloggers are ignorant and have to "vent" on line in a blog to feel better and help us poor common citizens. No thanks...I don't need your help and your display just cements it for me that you and your other blogger deputy friends don't have the know how or intelligence that it takes to confront issues so you resort to jabbing and cheap shot n people by way of this blog so you feel better. Call it what you want...if you have that much frustration go to mental health otherwise stop the moaning. If you want to blog impress us with at least one constructive comment. You aren't winning the public over with your brainless comments...poor deputy doesn't like his boss boo hoo...get over it, you guys and gals have beaten this to death on every single blog. Spend your time making a difference instead of complaining to an anonymous group that you don't like work now because your sheriff won't listen to you. We have all heard it enough...we get it. Move on! "
